I Like Nonsense, Too!

“I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

—Dr. Seuss

The humor and joy that fantasy and nonsense can create is infectious. By triggering laughter, it sparks healthy physical changes to the body; it is the priceless medicine that is fun, free, and easy to use. This excitement and joy in life derived from the thrill a person can find in nonrealistic baloney is furthermore useful in creating better social relations that maintains the delicate balance a person has to have in life. Fantasy and nonsense are not just necessary elements in life, but essential fundamentals that a person cannot live without. They are inevitably one of the crucial factors to the evolution of humankind.

Fantasy and nonsense can be a joyful place people escape to sometimes in order to relief stress and also to allow these two fundamental elements of daily life to take effect in a person’s body. As the source for laughter and merriment, they are widely known as an antidote to stress, pain, or conflict. The humor you find in life lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. “Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools. You have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.” According to Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D., laughter can cause more than several beneficial affects on a human’s body. It relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. It also boosts the immune system, where stress hormones decrease and immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies increase, thus improving your resistance to disease. By acting as the trigger to the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, laughter promotes an overall sense of well-being and relieve in pain. Thus, as the root of happiness, both fantasy and nonsense play eminent roles in creating a healthy body.

“A sense of humor… is needed armor. Joy in one’s heart and some laughter on one’s lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life.” Fantasy and nonsense in daily life is imperative in keeping the balance between ecstasy and pressure. Through creating merriment that triggers healthy chemical changes in a person’s body, people become more spontaneous by letting go of troubles in their mind. They also bring down defensive walls and help people better handle criticism, judgments and doubts. This betters social relations in ways such as allowing true feelings to surface, which makes communicating a lot easier, and also makes getting along less pressuring and more enjoyable. This cheerfulness also makes the contemplation of life more positive, since it leads people to seeing the lighter side of life. Being able to keep matters of a busy life in perspective, a person can be less overwhelmed and can leave more space emotionally for social relationships.

Fantasy and nonsense is a new perspective towards life, as through creating healthy physical and also mental changes, they encourage positive attitudes towards living and take away the absurdity people sometimes find overpowering. By bringing silliness into daily life, it balances out pressure through leaving tiny spaces of time for people to take a rest while escaping to another world where they find comfort and emotional balance. This allows the advancement of emotional control resulting in the betterment of social relations. Fantasy and nonsense, which people sometimes find immature and not useful, are actually important aspects to living a good life, and as they become an integrated part of life, creativity will flourish, making new friends will become a daily occurrence, and humankind will prosper.
